Bush Revises Sex Information
Is there a correlation between abortion and breast cancer? Or is there a
correlation between education about condoms and earlier sexual activity?
It depends who you ask. Research concludes that no, there is no correlation
between abortion and breast cancer. And again, no, there is no correlation
between education about condom and earlier sexual activity. And this is in
fact what was stated on the Web sites maintained by the National Cancer
Institute and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But that changed
with the new Bush administration. Suddenly the first statement was
downplayed and the second completely removed.
Did new scientific evidence surface recently to justify these changes?
No. I guess it all comes down to the fact that the new administration thinks
that promoting abstinence is the most efficient way to fight against S.T.D.
and unwanted pregnancy. The new administration also thinks that it is fine
to slightly bend scientific truths to serve their interest.
Super Bowl Ads
Getting a glimpse in what goes on in the mind of our "great leaders"
helps us understand some other minor event, like the White House "drug
prevention" ads during the Super Bowl. One of those ads is titled "pregnancy
test". It shows two parents doing a test to check if their young daughter is
pregnant. The event is certainly tragic.
At this point, the viewer might think that the goal of the ad is to
provide education about condoms or pregnancy prevention in general. Or
maybe, it might be an ad to increase awareness about the postcoital
contraception pills, a safe, effective and underutilized method that could
result in 1 million fewer abortions and 2 million fewer unintended
pregnancies each year in the United States.
That would make sense. But instead, at the very end of the clip, we learn
that this is in fact an ad against the use of drugs. This makes far less
sense to me, and I hope to the general public. But it certainly is more
compatible with the "war on drugs", "war on terrorism", "war on S.T.D. and
unwanted pregnancy through abstinence" views of the Bush administration.
